METS TO WEAR NEW PINSTRIPE HOME UNIFORM IN 2010

The New York Mets today announced they will wear a new pinstripe home uniform next season inspired by the early years of the franchise. The design combines new and old elements of Mets uniforms. The Mets created the retro uniform following research and positive responses to the jerseys the 1969 World Champion Mets wore during their 40th anniversary celebration in August.

The natural color and pinstripes were staples of the original Mets uniform when the team debuted in 1962. The Mets will also continue to wear their white uniform at home with the black jerseys as an alternate.

Tough to see the difference from the photo. I wish they would just get rid of any other home uniforms and make the pinstripe their only home uniform and the grey NEW YORK as the only road uniform.

This is all about money. Teams come up with new uniforms so they can sell them. Tradition takes a backseat to profit.

I see no difference here at all.

The New York Mets appear to be hitting the idea of fan activated, in-stadium social media activation out of the park (which is good because as you know, this year, that was a bit of a rarity. Sorry Mets fans, had to do it). In all seriousness, next year the Mets will debut several activations through txtstation that will help enhance the fan experience. Fans will be able to submit their pictures taken via camera phone to appear on the big screen. Verizon Wireless Fan Choice Awards will run various text polls to which results will be displayed in the stadium in real-time.

The Mets are full of gimmicks like this, but they have much bigger problems when it comes to social media and public relations in general.

Not to mention that the coverage at Citi Field pretty much sucks if you’re using the phone depicted in the above picture. Ahem.

Though Jay Horwitz, Mets vice president of media relations, wouldn’t detail how the club would alter its home uniforms, the New York Post reported on Tuesday that the alterations could include a departure from the pinstripes that have been a part of the home whites since the team’s 1962 inception.

And they may no longer be home whites. The Mets may switch to cream-colored uniforms similar to what the San Francisco Giants wear in AT&T Park.

Hmm. Well, I guess anything to get this year off their backs…

After leaving the totally bad ass Caesar’s Club, we passed the press boxes and noticed none other than KO rockin’ it. I yelled in through the open window that we worked for Gawker, which was met with a slightly surprising blank stare, but he was still happy to pose for a picture.

And not to sound like a jerk, but I hang out with celebs on the regular. They don’t impress me much (oh oh, oh ohhhh). But KO? This guy got me excited.

And that Piazza home run… jeez. Forget the postseason in ‘99 and the Subway Series in 2000. Forget Seaver in ‘69 and Doc, Straw, Gary, and Keith in ‘86. To me, that home run is the defining moment of the New York Mets.
